Symptoms

What Does an Acute Illness Feel Like?

An acute illness is one that comes on quickly, often over hours or a day or two, and makes you feel noticeably unwell. Patients often describe it like this:

  • “I woke up with a fever and my whole body aches.”
  • “It hurts to swallow and my glands feel swollen.”
  • “My nose won’t stop running and I can’t stop coughing.”
  • “My ear hurts and feels full or plugged.”
  • “I’ve had chills and a fever since last night.”
  • “I twisted my ankle and it’s swollen and hard to walk on.”
  • “My sinuses hurt and I’m so congested.”
  • “My child has a fever and isn’t eating or playing.”

Symptoms that often come along

  • Chills, sweating or feeling hot and cold
  • Headache and tiredness
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Rash or skin redness

How fast symptoms started, how long they have lasted and what makes them better or worse help your provider find the cause. Symptoms alone can’t always tell a cold from the flu or strep throat, which is why testing can help.

Know the difference

Acute vs. Chronic Conditions: What’s the Difference?

Acute conditions come on quickly and usually last a short time. Chronic conditions develop slowly and last months or years. Knowing which one you have shapes your treatment plan.

Acute conditionsChronic conditions
How it startsSuddenly, often after an infection or injurySlowly, often linked to long-standing habits or genetics
How long it lastsDays to a few weeksMonths to years
ExamplesFlu, strep throat, UTI, sprainDiabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis
Typical careDiagnosis, short-term treatment, follow-up if neededOngoing management and regular check-ups

Some acute problems can linger or lead to longer-term issues, especially infections that are not fully treated. If symptoms don’t improve as expected, a follow-up visit helps catch that early.

Diagnosis

How We Diagnose Acute Illnesses in Rosharon

The goal is to find the cause quickly so you get the right treatment, and only the treatment you need. Your provider chooses tests based on your symptoms, exam and history; a normal result does not rule out every cause.

Your Visit, Step by Step

  1. Check-in & history. When symptoms started, how severe they are and any medicines or allergies.
  2. Vitals & exam. Temperature, heart rate, breathing and a focused physical exam.
  3. In-office tests. Flu, strep, COVID-19, urine or blood sugar tests when needed.
  4. Results & plan. Your provider explains what is going on and the treatment options.
  5. Follow-up. Clear guidance on when to come back and which symptoms need urgent care.

Treatment

Acute Conditions Treatment in Rosharon

Treatment depends on the cause. Many viral illnesses, like colds and most sore throats, get better with rest, fluids and symptom relief, while bacterial infections such as strep throat or a UTI may need a prescription. Our providers aim to ease your symptoms quickly and lower the chance of complications.

  • Clear diagnosis before treatment
  • Prescriptions only when they will help
  • Injury care guidance for sprains and strains
  • Advice on rest, fluids, school and work
  • Telemedicine follow-up when appropriate

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Acute Conditions

Still have questions?

Talk to our front office Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Call (832) 400-2050

An acute condition is an illness or injury that starts suddenly and usually lasts from a few days to a few weeks. Common examples are the flu, strep throat, colds, fevers, ear and sinus infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs) and muscle sprains.

Yes. Walk-ins are welcome at our Rosharon clinic, 15030 Highway 6, Rosharon, TX 77583, Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Calling ahead at (832) 400-2050 helps us prepare for your visit.

Yes. We offer in-house flu and strep tests and rapid COVID-19 testing, plus urinalysis and other lab tests, so your provider can often confirm what is causing your symptoms during the same visit.

Flu usually comes on fast with fever, body aches, chills and strong tiredness, while a cold builds slowly with a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing and a mild sore throat. Because symptoms overlap, a quick in-office flu test is the most reliable way to tell.

Not always. Most sore throats are caused by viruses, which antibiotics do not treat. A rapid strep test shows whether bacteria are the cause; if it is positive, your provider can prescribe the right treatment.

Call 911 or go to the nearest ER for chest pain or pressure, trouble breathing, signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech), fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, a high fever with a stiff neck or confusion, or a serious injury such as an obvious broken bone.

Rest, drink plenty of fluids and keep track of your temperature and other symptoms. Seek care if the fever is high, lasts more than a few days, or comes with a rash, trouble breathing, confusion or a stiff neck. For babies and young children, call us or your pediatrician early.

We can evaluate UTI symptoms such as burning with urination, frequent urges and lower belly pain, and test your urine in the office. Your provider then explains the results and the treatment that fits you.

Yes. Muscle sprains and strains are among the acute conditions we treat. Your provider examines the injury and recommends care to reduce pain and swelling. A suspected broken bone or a badly deformed joint should be seen in an emergency room.

Yes. Telemedicine and video visits are available for many minor illnesses and follow-ups. Self-pay telemedicine visits are listed on our Cash Pricing page. Some conditions still need an in-person exam or test.

We work with most insurance plans, including BCBS, United Healthcare and Cigna. If you do not have insurance, our self-pay rates are listed up front on our Cash Pricing page. Call our front office to verify your coverage.

Sometimes. Most acute illnesses go away fully, but some infections or untreated problems can linger or lead to long-term health issues. Following up when symptoms do not improve helps catch problems early.
