Quick answer

High cholesterol means you have too much LDL (“bad”) cholesterol or other fats in your blood, which can slowly build up inside your arteries and raise your risk of heart attack and stroke. It almost never causes symptoms, so Careprime Clinic in Rosharon finds it with a lipid panel, looks at your other risk factors, and builds a plan to bring your numbers down.

Symptoms

Does High Cholesterol Cause Symptoms?

High cholesterol usually causes no symptoms at all, which is why a blood test is the only reliable way to know your numbers. These are things patients tell us when they come in about it.

  • “I feel totally fine, so I was surprised”
  • “My dad had a heart attack at 52”
  • “The health fair said my number was high”
  • “I eat a lot of fried food and I know it”
  • “My triglycerides came back really high”
  • “I was told my good cholesterol is too low”
  • “I stopped my pills because I felt okay”
  • “I want to fix this without medicine if I can”

Signs that may point to long-standing high cholesterol

  • Yellowish bumps on the skin near the eyes
  • Fatty bumps on the elbows, knees or tendons
  • A gray or white ring around the colored part of the eye at a young age
  • Chest discomfort with activity that eases with rest
  • Leg cramping when walking that goes away when you stop
  • A family history of early heart disease

These signs are not common, and many people with very high cholesterol never have them. Some, like chest discomfort with activity, can mean the arteries are already narrowed and need prompt attention.

Know your numbers

LDL vs. HDL

Cholesterol travels in your blood packed inside particles called lipoproteins. The two main kinds work in opposite ways.

LDL (“bad” cholesterol)HDL (“good” cholesterol)
What it doesCarries cholesterol into the artery walls, where it can build up as plaqueHelps carry extra cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver
What you wantLower is betterHigher is better
General targetUnder 100 mg/dL is considered optimal for most adults; your goal may be lower if you have heart disease or diabetes40 mg/dL or higher for men and 50 mg/dL or higher for women
What raises itSaturated and trans fats, extra weight, inactivity, family genesRegular exercise, not smoking, and healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts
What lowers itFiber, less fried and processed food, weight loss, and medicine when neededSmoking, inactivity, extra weight and uncontrolled blood sugar

Triglycerides are a third number on your report. Under 150 mg/dL is the usual goal, and they rise with sugar, alcohol, extra weight and uncontrolled diabetes.

Diagnosis

How We Check Cholesterol in Rosharon

Your provider looks at your lipid panel together with your blood pressure, blood sugar, smoking history, age and family history. A normal lipid panel is reassuring, but it doesn’t rule out every heart risk.

Your Visit, Step by Step

  1. Check-in & history. Bring your insurance card, all medicine and supplement bottles, and any old lab reports. We ask about family heart history, diet, alcohol and smoking.
  2. Vitals and exam. We check your blood pressure, weight and waist size, listen to your heart, and look for other signs of risk.
  3. Blood work. We draw your lipid panel and any other labs you need. Ask ahead if you should fast.
  4. Your plan. Your provider explains your numbers and your overall risk, then talks through food, activity and, if it makes sense, a cholesterol medicine.
  5. Follow-up testing. Most people have a repeat lipid panel a few months after starting changes or medicine, then once or twice a year when stable.

Treatment

High Cholesterol Treatment in Rosharon

Treatment starts with everyday habits. Eating more beans, oats, fruits and vegetables, cutting back on fried food, fatty meats and sweets, moving your body most days, and losing even a few pounds can all bring LDL and triglycerides down. Quitting smoking helps raise HDL.

Some people also need medicine, especially with very high LDL, diabetes, heart disease or a strong family history. If that’s you, your provider at Careprime Clinic will explain the options, what side effects to watch for, and why sticking with it matters even when you feel fine. We recheck your labs to make sure the plan is working.

  • Lipid panel and repeat testing
  • Plain-language review of your numbers
  • Food and activity planning
  • Medicine discussed when needed
  • Blood pressure and blood sugar checked too
  • Telemedicine follow-ups and refills

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About High Cholesterol

Still have questions?

Talk to our front office Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Call (832) 400-2050

Not always. Many lipid panels are fine without fasting, but your provider may ask for an 8 to 12 hour fast (water only) if your triglycerides were high before or if blood sugar is being checked at the same visit. Ask Careprime Clinic when you book so you come in ready.

For most adults, total cholesterol of 240 mg/dL or more is high, and 200 to 239 is borderline. An LDL of 160 or more is high, while under 100 is considered optimal. Your provider looks at your full risk picture, not just one number.

Yes. Careprime Clinic at 15030 Highway 6 welcomes walk-ins on weekdays from 8 AM to 5 PM and during special Saturday hours. If you plan to fast, coming in earlier in the day makes it easier.

Our $250 self-pay physical includes blood tests such as a lipid panel, CMP, CBC, A1C and iron. For a lipid panel on its own, or for exact pricing with office fees, please confirm with our front office at (832) 400-2050 or check our Cash Pricing page.

Most plans cover cholesterol screening and follow-up care, but details vary. Careprime Clinic works with most insurance plans, including BCBS, United Healthcare and Cigna. Call your plan or our office to check your coverage.

For many people, yes, at least partly. More fiber, less saturated fat, regular activity and weight loss can lower LDL and triglycerides. Some people still need medicine because of genes, diabetes or heart disease, and your provider will talk through what fits you.

Often it is long term, because cholesterol tends to go back up if you stop. Some people who make big lifestyle changes are able to reduce or adjust their medicine with their provider’s guidance. Never stop on your own without talking to your provider first.

Triglycerides are a type of fat in your blood that your body makes from extra calories. They often run high with sugary drinks, alcohol, extra weight, uncontrolled diabetes and some medicines. Cutting back on sugar and alcohol can lower them noticeably.

Healthy adults are often checked every 4 to 6 years starting around age 20, and more often with risk factors. Once you have high cholesterol or start medicine, testing is usually repeated a few months later and then once or twice a year. Your Careprime provider will set your schedule.

Children are commonly screened once between ages 9 and 11 and again between 17 and 21, and sooner if a parent has very high cholesterol or early heart disease. Careprime Clinic sees children and teens and can talk with you about whether testing makes sense for your child.

Yes, many follow-ups work well as a video visit at Careprime Clinic. You’ll still need to come in for blood draws, but going over results, side effects and refills can often be done from home.

Careprime Clinic in Rosharon treats high cholesterol as part of everyday primary care. Patients come to our Highway 6 clinic from Pearland, Alvin, Manvel, Iowa Colony and Sienna. Call (832) 400-2050 to schedule or walk in.
